Powley

Consultation of the communities

The Native Alliance of Quebec is the only organization in Quebec recognized by the two levels of government to perform consultations regarding the Powley decision on behalf of its 26,000 members in Quebec.

The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Powley decision is major for the Metis of Quebec. The highest court of Canada has just confirmed that the Metis people have a collective right to exercise treaty and ancestral rights. Consequently, the federal government has committed to beginning negociations with the native organization representatives on a national scale, and in Quebec, it’s with the Native Alliance of Quebec that these negociations will be carried out since it is the only organization recognized by the government of Canada via the federal negociator on behalf of the Metis.

With the help of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, the Native Alliance of Quebec wishes to clearly show, using detailed historical and anthropological research, legal opinion materials and consultations of its members on a basis, that its members and metis communities meet all the criteria listed in the decision of the Supreme Court of Canda in the Powley affair in order to qualify themselves “Metis communities” in true capacity.
