Welcome to the Native Alliance of Quebec

Dear Members,

It is with great optimism that I am beginning the year 2013 as President Grand Chief of the Native Alliance of Quebec (NAQ). We began the year with strength by resolving very important files for the NAQ in January.

First, the Federal Court affirmed the position of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP), of which the NAQ is a very active member, through its ruling of January 8 in the case " Daniels v. Canada " recognizing that Metis and Non-Status Indians should be recognized as Indians under subsection 91 (24) of the Constitution Act, 1867 and fall under federal jurisdiction.

A few days after that ruling, I had the pleasure to present Mr. Fernand Chalifoux, of the Fondation Fernand Chalifoux (FFC), with a check in an amount totalling the loan owed to the FFC. The loan was granted by the FFC to help the NAQ rebuild its financial situation. Today, the Alliance is finally debt-free and can now move forward with its projects.

One of many projects that I am particularly fond of is our web site. We started some work to modernize it, to make it more user-friendly and more appealing, especially to the communities. In a few months, you will be able to see some significant changes in this direction.

You will also see changes in the membership program of which the rejuvenation, through the up-date of its administration, is expected by the members and the personnel of the Provincial Office.

The creation of a 6th administrative region, that will include the Gaspesia peninsula, is still one of my goals.

Of course, some of these objectives and projects can only be realized with your help. This is why I need your support to achieve them.

I would like to end this message by thanking all the members of the Board and the Provincial Office personnel, as well as the communities and their members for their commitment toward our organization. It is this commitment that makes our strength.

Sincerely yours,

Robert Bertrand
President Grand Chief
